Summer Opening

In July, Summer Opening is the perfect excuse to visit the so-called Pearl of the Atlantic.

In a unique natural setting with the Atlantic Ocean and Funchal as a backdrop, Summer Opening is a true festival in tribute to the sun and positive energy. “This festival puts the fun into Funchal and the mad into Madeira!” That is how it is described by the English newspaper, The Times.

This urban festival takes place in the amphitheatre of the Parque de Santa Catarina in the centre of Madeira’s capital, where, for two days, you can hear good vibrations beaten out by hip-hop, reggae, funk and soul.

So that you can fully enjoy the festival and the best island destination in the world there are two-day passes, to which you can add “4 elements” packages that offer experiences like paragliding, surf trips, downhill mountain bike rides, jeep trips, and catamaran whale-watching trips.

About the local

With more than 500 years of existence, Funchal has many points of interest. In the historical center, which can be reached by foot, there are several monuments that can be visited such as the 16th century Cathedral, the Fort of São Tiago Or the Museum of Embroidery and Wine, dedicated to two very popular regional products. To have a view of the city and the bay, nothing like a trip on the Cable Car.
One of Madeira's attractions is the gastronomy, with many specialties to try, which can be complemented by a visit to the Farmers Market to open your appetite. From exotic fruits to traditional sweets, to lively fish stalls or colorful flower stalls, it's a must-visit.
One thing is for sure, those who go to Funchal cannot help taking a stroll around the island and walking in the small fishing villages along the seashore, the natural swimming pools, the gardens and the various belvederes with breathtaking views of the island. One of the best examples is Cabo Girão, at 580 mt altitude, with a dizzying view over the small cultivated areas that are seen at the foot of the cliff. It is the highest promontory in Europe and the second highest in the world. The Mirador of Eira do Serrado and the viewpoint of the Balconies are other references not to be missed.
