CA Vilar de Mouros

The most historical of Portuguese festivals returns in August. CA Vilar de Mouros will shake the Minho village once again with lots of music and celebration.

The festival origins go all the way back to the 60s, back then closer to Minho traditional folk events. The first time it took place closer to today’s patterns was in 1971, earning the name of “Portuguese Woodstock”. That year’s line-up counted with international names such as Elton John and Manfred Mann, mythical Portuguese artists like Amália Rodrigues, Quarteto 1111 or Duo Ouro Negro, and the Band of the National Republican Guard, since this event still took place under the Portuguese Dictatorship.

After its historical first edition, the festival took place irregularly in 1982 and 1996 and became an annual event between 1999 and 2006. It stopped again after 2014, only returning in 2016 and not stopping ever since. Nowadays it focuses mainly on rock and indie music, with its spotlight on cult bands with a generous dash of nostalgia.

This festival is an event that became a mandatory pilgrimage for many festival-goers. CA Vilar de Mouros is here to stay and keeps on “getting better with age”.
