About the local

Figueira da Foz is known for being very lively and a very popular summer holiday destination for the Portuguese, a tradition that dates back to the 19th century when "bathing in Figueira" was a habit among the aristocracy of the Centre of Portugal. The casino, one of the attractions of the city, dates from that time.
The huge sandy beach, where the festival is also held, have the ideal conditions for practicing various sports such as football, beach rugby or volleyball. Water sports are the biggest attraction, as are the competitions of international surf and sailing championships. It is said that Figueira da Foz has the longest right wave in Europe - as good for beginners as for more experienced surfers.
It is common to see people walking or cycling on the long promenade, which ends at Praia of Buarcos, which is very crowded because it is more protected from the north winds by Cape Mondego.
Through the Serra da Boa Viagem and following the forest road, you come to the beach of Quiaios, a friendly village of small houses that is part of any route along the sea in this region.
